Hi, my name is Marlyn Spaaij. As a director, writer and storyboard artist I aim to tell stories that can move and transport audiences everywhere.

I play the guitar, write songs and I recently bought a banjo. Also: I have a cat, her name is Piep (or Squeek). I grew up with my sisters in the rural east of the Netherlands, in a region bordering on Germany called Twente.

Ever since I was little I've had a fascination with nature, folklore and music. Forests are my favourite places to be although I currently live in the medieval centre of Utrecht.

Sisters of the Mist

Cobain: Montage of Heck

Book of the Month

The Circle

2013

In the year 2013 I was mostly working as a character animator on the Dutch feature Tripple Trouble. But I manages to take a short break and animate this 30 second book promo, commissioned by DWDD a popular Dutch late night talk show. Promoting the book of the month: The Circle by Dave Eggers.

Process

In only 5 days I had to read the book, do a rough storyboard (that needed to be approved by the shows editorial staff), and finish the final animation. It was fun challenge to find a limited animation style and stick to simple black and white contrasts.
