Hi, my name is Marlyn Spaaij. As a director, writer and storyboard artist I aim to tell stories that can move and transport audiences everywhere.

I play the guitar, write songs and I recently bought a banjo. Also: I have a cat, her name is Piep (or Squeek). I grew up with my sisters in the rural east of the Netherlands, in a region bordering on Germany called Twente.

Ever since I was little I've had a fascination with nature, folklore and music. Forests are my favourite places to be although I currently live in the medieval centre of Utrecht.

Cobain: Montage of Heck is a 2015 documentary film about Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain. The film was directed by Brett Morgen and premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. It received a limited theatrical release worldwide and premiered on television in the United States on HBO on April 24, 2015.

Process

After finishing my work as an animator on Trippel Trappel I worked as an animator on this outstanding documentary. I had always been a fan of Nirvana and was very excited to work on this.

Besides animating the characters and the shading, I was asked to train new animators joining the team which was ever expanding due to the very tight production schedule.
